Endurance Review

This installment had me consumed. I couldn’t put it down.

The track across the wasteland to save her sister, her resolve to never back down has my heart in knots. Regina has turned into the hero I have always dreamed of. She knows her goal, her mission and she will let nothing stop her.

During her track, she meets with new friends, old friends and foes alike.

She is faced with some very real and difficult choices, some I don’t know if I could make. This set her apart and makes this story exhilarating. I’m invested in not only Regina but in this world that Lance Erlick has created. The world building is like noting I have read this year. Descriptive, lush and creative. Mr. Erlick has a way of showing you the world that has gone to hell and making you feel for that dying world in a way that makes my heart ache. He takes time with each character, making them memorable.

This fourth installment is by far my fav and I can’t wait to read more. I have to know, no, I need to know.

As I have said for the other three books, I highly recommend this series. This is a hidden gem, you will not be disappointed.

Happy Reading

Defiance Review

There’s way more going on in this book. Regina is still on the run, but now she must travel the waste land that once was earth to get to her sister. The mother appears again, as mysterious as always, so I’m still on the fence about her. I feel like she should be doing more for her daughters.

We get a deeper look into this world and the way that it ticks. There were some clues as to the menlessness (I’m pretty sure I just made that word up, but you know what I mean :b), but not enough for me to figure it out. As much as a world full of women is intriguing, I got to know what happened to the men and if there are any left. So many mysteries.

Oh why the cliff hanger? My heart is racing and I need to know what happens. I hate cliff changers, but lucky for me I have the fourth book that I can’t wait to get going.

As I have said before, take a change on this series, it’s a rich world full of action, mystery and darkness. It will have you and the edge of you seat and wanting more.

Happy Reading

Vigilance Review

Regina Shen is pursued by the notorious Department of Antiquities for her unique DNA. She jumps the Barrier Wall into the Federation to find her kidnapped sister. Stuck on a heavily-guarded closed university campus, she must use her wits to escape and rescue her sister without letting either of two rival Antiquities inspectors capture her.
The second book in the Regina Shen series is even more exciting than the first! Regina has grown so much as a person. She’s strong-willed, independent, and pretty awesome. The lore behind the story was great too. I never knew what to expect while reading.

Resilience 5* Review

I found this book to be a quick enjoyable read. The author created a unique take on the YA dystopian and climate change genres. The story centers around a young woman who is struggling to survive in a desperate world. She is considered inferior to the elite city dwellers. Regina and her fellow Marginals are forced to live outside the flood walls and live in the swamps. The author created characters I feel invested in and is quite talented at world building. The book finishes nicely without a huge cliffhanger, yet left me wanting to know more about these characters futures. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Big Short

Just saw the Big Short and have to say it hit most of the catastrophe quite well.

The characters facing the audience with asides was a bit distracting. Maybe some people like that. And the technical discussion might put a few people to sleep, though the movie didn’t overly burden it with technical stuff. The one piece I felt was missing was the depth of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (i.e. government) involvement in the mad dash to inflate the real estate market. They were both in over their heads in backstopping these bad loans. That was one reason the government had to bail out the banks. They were in bed with them.

Spoiler alert. There are no good guys in this movie. But there are a lot of short-sighted and a few visionary greedy people making huge lottery winnings off the rest of us. By the way, for those who think too-big-to-fail is a bad idea, we’ve lost almost 2000 banks since 2007 and the big bank have gobbled up losers to get even bigger. Stay tuned.

Overall a very good movie. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a refresher on what happened or more insight into what could happen again. By the way, if you wrote this as fiction,no one would believe it.

Another Regina Shen Vigilance Review

By D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

Regina Shen Vigilance

This second novel in the Regina Shen series continues the engrossing post-apocalyptic saga begun in the first book. The setting is a world where the ice caps have melted and created two levels of society, and Regina is one of the outcasts here until authorities discover her unique DNA makeup, which holds possibilities for the continued existence of an increasingly threatened humanity.

Book One set the stage and should really be enjoyed before Vigilence; but even newcomers to this series will be able to quickly absorb its setting and characters, which open with Regina’s concerns about her new family and threats to its existence. She’s on a mission, hunting for a kidnapped sister – and to do so, she must jump the wall and enter a forbidden world filled with uncertainty and threats.

Part of what drives the action in the Regina Shen series is psychological depth: Regina doesn’t just react to events; she strives to understand the people behind them: “Alice was cute in a big-girl way. But she had hunger in her eyes to get what she wanted. In the swamps, I avoided bartering with her type. They tried to steal what you brought, and then steal what little they bartered in exchange. Afterwards, they gloated at your misfortune.”

In any fictional account, it’s this level of emotional depth and attention to motivations behind actions that elevate the superior read from the mundane nonstop staccato action thriller – and Regina Shen: Vigilance features this in abundance.

From the psyche of the Federation and its different lifestyles (““You want to race?” I asked. “That’s Marginal,” she whispered. “The Federation promotes Harmony, not competition.“) to nefarious plans to exploit Regina’s DNA for less than altruistic or survival purposes, the story line is fast-paced but loses none of its tension by exploring different protagonists’ motivations and concerns.

The result is a gripping sequel in the series, highly recommended for both prior fans and newcomers to Regina Shen.
